Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the United States (behind heart disease), currently accounting for 1 out of every 4 deaths.

Survival rates are improving - the current 5-year survival rate for cancers diagnosed between 5 and 10 years ago is 65%, up from 50% in 1974-76.

Cancer is treated by a variety of methods, including surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy and immunotherapy.

Early detection and abstaining from cancer-causing activities (like smoking and heavy alcohol usage) are both areas in which positive action can be taken to minimize or prevent the occurence and severity of cancer. Lifestyle changes like nutrition improvement and obesity treatment will also help in prevention.
